Rams giving up on Jerome Bettis named one of worst trades in NFL history

By: Cameron DaSilva

Jerome Bettis is best known for his contributions to the Pittsburgh Steelers where he earned the nickname “The Bus,” won a Super Bowl and was a four-time Pro Bowler.

Some younger fans might forget that he began his career with the Rams and was very successful in two short seasons with Los Angeles. As a rookie in 1993, he was a first-team All-Pro, rushing for 1,429 yards and seven touchdowns. The following year, he gained 1,025 yards and was a Pro Bowler for the Rams.

Then Los Angeles thought it best to move him to fullback, which was an unwise decision. The Rams traded him and a third-round pick to the Steelers for a second- and fourth-rounder, essentially getting nothing in return for the future Hall of Famer.

Was a bad move but nearly as bad as the Rams choosing Martz over Warner. By far the worse mistake the Rams franchise ever made IMO...

Judge our new coach in his third year. After all our last coach was to game strategy what Yoko Ono was to the Beatles...

Yeah, Coach Rich Brooks never wanted to use Bettis, more passing attack offense and was fired after two years but damage was done. Rams seem to land their share of pass happy coaches.

The Bettis thing is water under the bridge to me. Our O-Line was weak back then and Bettis was running up the back of our linemen. It was frustrating as hell to watch. We weren't going anywhere with or without him. Then we ended up with Faulk a couple of years later and won a Super Bowl.

That truly was surreal when they decided that to get anywhere they needed to trade the RB who was performing and not the lineman who couldn’t get it done.

Then again the Rams quite often are a circus of poor decisions. As many have said, enjoy what we have now because history since the early 80s is it ain’t gonna last.

I was hoping we’d start a new culture of excellence when they moved back. McVay and some nice picks got them hot fast. Now we are on the edge of ‘Will they get even better?’ or ‘Boy, that didn’t last long’.

Exactly! Those OLs were awful. Love to know how many runs of 1 yard or less Bettis had with the Rams. He had 7 yards on 8 carries at Chicago, 13 yards on 10 carries against the Raiders, 23 yards on 13 carries at Tampa and 21 games with fewer than 100 yards in 1993 and 94, including the last 11 of the 94 season. Wasn’t his fault, but I remember thinking Lawrence Phillips would be an upgrade if he could stay out of trouble. I was way off.

John Shaw was GM and running the Rams at the time of the Bettis trade and for long afterwards. Shaw, who ran the Rams from about 1983 to about 2009, was a competent businessman but among the worst pro football General Managers of the modern era. Thus, he made Georgia Frontiere lots of $$$, during the Ram's later, pre-move years in L.A (the 1980's and early 90's), and by engineering their move to St. Louis. Nevertheless, Shaw was an almost breathtakingly ineffective GM. His management style and inexplicably poor personnel decisions led the Rams to become a running joke in the NFL during their later years in L.A. before the move, and during most of their stay in St Louis. However, because he managed to keep a low profile, Shaw never earned the scorn he so richly deserved for allowing the Rams to be transformed from among the NFL's elite to perpetual doormats (Shaw was present during the "greatest show on turf" years in St. Louis, but Dick Vermeil had more to do with assembling that roster than anyone else).

As one Rams assistant coach once explained to me, "John Shaw [was] a football idiot."

Jerome Fatass claimed he had a back injury and was going to retire. He ran into the back of players because he just hit the line and fell over every time they gave him the ball. The only game he came to play was against the Steelers when he put up career numbers. Perhaps knowing the Steelers wanted him. When he said he was retiring the Rams took what they could get-a 5th round pick. Fatass quit on the Rams and I will always hate that fat SOB.

The shit Jalen Ramsey is pulling on the Jags is right out of the Fatass playbook.
