Lindsey Thiry@LindseyThiry

Gurley is out because of a thigh contusion suffered in Week 5 against the Seahawks.

#LARams transactions:
• signed RB John Kelly to the active roster from the practice squad
• waived WR Nsimba Webster

The Rams like a lot of teams use the PS as a strategic reserve. With Gurley out they need 3 active backs on the roster, so they promoted Kelly. You can't run 2 backs without a 3rd, cause otherwise you are one ding away from running one back.

Interesting how that worked out ;)

I was expecting Kelly to be promoted. Webster being waiived was a suprise. I thouhgt he had potential as a wide receiver and return man.

Well now they have a spot on the PS. Webster could end up there.

They may play games with the PS all season depending on the injury situation.

For example, if (knock on wood) Goff misses a game or 2, I expect them to promote Wolford to be the game day #2 qb behind Bortles.

I mean it's obvious that they use the PS as a kind of storage unit for emergency promotions. It's true that a guy on the PS does not really get to develop much as a player, but, when they put their own guys there (as opposed to picking up players on waivers), they have someone who has been in camp and knows the system and culture, and who has been studying and weight training under Rams supervision.

Makes sense.

I’m hoping Webster doesn’t get picked up. Like that kid a lot.

I’m a little confused. Why drop Webster? Why not just pick up another RB to fill Kelly’s void?

Which is why I’m disappointed. But let’s keep that off here.

Webster was on the active roster. Kelly was bumped up to the active roster & Webster waived. If no one picks him up, Rams can sign him to PS.

Kelly knows the system and unlike CJ last year, knows how to pass block in this offense and knows the routes they like. So unlike with CJ, when Kelly is on the field, the D doesn't know if it is run or pass.

Webster was an obvious candidate because he is new and they had 7 WRs.

And as was said, he can still end up on the PS.

Sorry! I was doubly confused, thinking Webster was already on the practice squad (w/Kelly) and dropped from that. Hope they keep him.

This is really cool. McVay said Rams offense was kind of searching for an identity. Reading between the lines I feel he meant backfield identity. It's time to unleash Henderson. I'm feeling pretty good about this. Go Rams.

What will be interesting to me is who gets more snaps, Henderson or Kelly.
If Kelly gets more? That would indicate to me that Henderson is lagging.

Good point Dick. As for Gurley, observing from afar, it does also seem he is having some issues with dealing with the mental aspects of nagging injuries. Doesn't seem to have the same fire in his body language. I may be off base, but the mental aspects of nagging injuries can be as tough to overcome as the physical aspects. Andrew Luck is an example. Hurting everyday does take the fire from ones soul.

It really doesn't matter much who is in the backfield at this point... if the Oline doesn't improve, we really won't be able to tell which back is better.. Henderson or Kelly.

He wasn’t waived because of potential (which he has).

He was waived because there are plenty ahead of him on the depth chart. You waive what you can afford to waive.
